Youths are the future of a country and are the rays of hope for parents.  The applications of scientific inventions and discoveries for the welfare of human society do have positive impact on human health, both physically and mentally, especially among the youths, who are the budding talents of any society. However, these applications also have negative impacts that cannot be ignored.

Youth, more precisely the student’s mental health is of utmost importance for the upcoming generation of any society. As a child(student) starts going to school, his/her mental health gets effected by numerous factors like environment of class, behavior of teachers, peer-groups, rules and regulations of the school, curriculum of  different standards. Students, especially teenagers develop a tendency to follow habits such as like chewing tobacco, smoking, consumption of  liquors  and drugs like cocaine, heroin etc. which are highly injurious  to human health  and are prohibited as well. Addictions to these harmful substances cause a negative impact on mental health as the youth becomes dependent on these harmful things. Apart from these, the increasing pressure in educational field creates havoc in student’s mind regarding their existence in this competitive world. The prime causes for this may be the pressure to excel in academics and in home. Also indulging in neck-to-neck competition with the people around and never ending race to fit into the societal norms may even lead to suicidal tendencies in critical conditions (depression).

Depression, in normal terms it refers to sadness and dejection etc. K.D.Tripathi (1985,1 January), in his book “Essentials of Medical Pharmacology” quotes  “Depression is a leading psychiatric disorder, which is characterized by symptoms like mood, loss of interest and pleasure, low energy, worthlessness, guilt, agitation, change in appetite and sleep, melancholia, suicidal thought, etc.” In present scenario depression is the demon destroying the mental wellbeing of student so in order to fight with this demon we need to gather courage, will power, stand hand in hand, supporting each other to create awareness among people, especially students. We can fight depression by taking into account the following steps, such as –

  1. To build a healthy environment both at home and educational institutes for the better growth and development of the child.
  2. To stop comparison and pressure upon child in order to ensure his/her proper well-being.
  3. To be liberal enough, so as to allow them to follow their dreams and passion.
  4. To try to inculcate an attitude of positiveness to deal with every hurdles of life and achieve success, prosperity and happiness.

So as a conscious citizen of a society, it becomes our prime duty to build up confidence in those suffering from mental illness and make them realize that ………….

Information communication technology (ICT) helps in reducing and coping up with stress in the field of education by which students get more facilities to achieve their dreams and also create a strong positive attitude for better mental health.

If students don’t understand and are unable to learn any topic related to their curriculum, especially his /her lessons taught by the teacher, there are chances that they may go into depression due to his/her in capabilities in learning and may assume that the topic is tough or feel like they can’t cope with it or they are less than their classmates. They may suffer from ‘exam phobia’. In that situation ICT can come to their rescue. Student can see tutorial classes on YouTube channels, more popularly known as smart-class and seek help regarding their topic of interest with teachers, fellow-mates over the social networking sides like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter etc with the help of internet. They will be provided with better educational sites such as study.com, researchgate.com, shodhganga.com etc. on which they can search for the topics of their interest, and can seek help in different subjects for assignments, different projects etc. Apart from this audio visual, classroom plays a vital role in gaining knowledge as they make education more interesting for students. It is a general belief that education gathered with sounds and visuals have a stronger impact on the learning and understanding pattern of students. This creates an optimum level of confidence amongst students, like……YES!!! They can empower anything. As students develop better confidence and a hint of positivity in their life, it automatically improves their habits, etiquettes, attitude, tolerance, morality, self-esteem, perspectives towards life, and all these qualities contribute in developing a better mental health. In today’s world as the families are going nuclear with more number of service holders in each family, students from nuclear families feel insecure & lonely due to several causes like lack of love & care from parent which they expect the most, leading the playful and colorful childhood in boarding school instead of domestic environment. But in this sad situation, a good solution is that students can be in touch with their parents and relatives by help of ICT like making phone-calls, chatting through video-calls, sending of photos of each moment, etc which can make them feel homely amidst the unfamiliar surroundings and incur in them a sense of security which they feel at home. This would help the students feel good about the surroundings and this way it can help them in boosting their mental health in a positive way. Some suggestions from my perspective on ICT in terms of mental health are as follows:

  • Easily available and supportable software should be introduced so that the students in rural areas, who are not economically sound, can get the benefits of ICT even with low-cost android phones.
  • ICT related special classes should be conducted so as to make the students aware of its uses, such that they can browse through websites to gather important information relevant to their studies.

Mental health is directly related with physical health. Students suffering from malnutrition are unfit to perform daily work. Lack of nutrition and following improper hygiene practices creates various diseases like anemia, diarrhea, cholera, malaria, dengue, fainting, indigestion, etc. Due to poor physical and mental health of a student cannot grow and develop and this way it causes a negative impact on the mental state of them. So we cannot deny the importance of physical health for the wellbeing of the mental health of the students.

Mental health is a challenging issue for students. Students are regarded as the future-makers and considered as the hope of their parents to take forward their family lineage of customs, traditions and honor of the family. If students do not have a proper mental state, there is no scope for betterment in the society which will be a big loss for us in terms of human resources. Only a positive attitude can drive and cross the barriers of the challenging issues for better health. We may conclude by one sentence of Lord Buddha that…

To keep the body in good health is a duty…

Otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.
